Garden Gate Cafe

December 23, 2014

To Our Friends Old and New:

We are tremendously excited to communicate with you regarding a significant change in our business operations. For the past three years we have been extremely fortunate to have established and grown our lunch restaurant, the Garden Gate Cafe, on the mall in downtown Kalamazoo. In that process we have developed many wonderful new relationships, re-connected with some long lost friends, met hundreds of wonderful people, employed dozens of amazing young men and women and provided a fun and relaxing atmosphere for our guests to enjoy high quality food. We have also been lucky to be a part of many significant events with families and organizations throughout the community.

Recently, however, the demands of our growing business, as it is currently configured, are causing us to re-think how we are organized and re-evaluate our vision for the longer term. As 2014 closes we will begin a new chapter in our entrepreneurial journey. In the new year we will join forces with an amazing team of young, energetic restaurateurs to create a new dining experience that is sure to enhance the downtown Kalamazoo food reputation. We will become a part of a new ownership/management team that will include four other partners, all of whom have been a part of the growth and development of the hugely successful Salt of the Earth restaurant in Fennville, Michigan. We will move from being a lunch and dessert establishment to becoming a fun, casual dining experience that will feature an amazing menu of locally sourced farm to table cuisine that will serve the evening visitors to the downtown area. Details of the plan, including the official name of the new project, are still coming together and will be announced soon.

So, the Garden Gate Cafe, as we know it today, will be closing at the end of January. We are offering most of the 'front of the house' equipment, furnishings and decor for sale, either as an entire package or piece by piece beginning early next month. We will continue to serve a limited menu to all of our loyal customers throughout the month of January, then close for the 'makeover' on January 31. Our goal is to have the new establishment open for business for the start of the summer season.

These are exciting times for us. We are extremely thankful for the support of the people and businesses of the downtown community and beyond. We are thankful we have been able to touch so many lives in our three year history. We are looking forward to continued success in this new and exciting endeavor. We look forward to seeing you at the GGC throughout the month of January, and at the 'new place' this summer.
